How does Revelation 21:1-8 relate to Tao 4?
Revelation 21:
1 And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea.
2 And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.
3 And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God.
4 And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.
5 And he that sat upon the throne said, Behold, I make all things new. And he said unto me, Write: for these words are true and faithful.
6 And he said unto me, It is done. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. I will give unto him that is athirst of the fountain of the water of life freely.
7 He that overcometh shall inherit all things; and I will be his God, and he shall be my son.
8 But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.
God is Everything
In Revelation 21:6 The writer has God identify himself as "Alpha and Omega." These are the first and last letters in the Greek alphabet. The writer is defining Great Spirit/God/Tao as both "the beginning and the end."
This means that God is everything.
Reality begins with spirit and ends with spirit.
This same principle is echoed in Isaiah 44:6 "Thus saith the Lord, the King of Israel and his Redeemer, the Lord of hosts: I am the first and I am the last; besides me there is no god". These statements underscore the belief that there is one universal energy. We may call this energy by many names. But this does not change the energy it only changes the person who is attempting to define this energy.
Alpha
In the beginning is the word, the thought and then from this thought comes action. We meditate on the truth that we are one with God, one with the beginning and that this great circle of Alpha to Omega is right now. God is all there is now and always. And though, in our human existence, our lives are defined by birth, then life, then death. Great Spirit is Alpha. Each day as we awaken, within the first moment, we declare love, beauty, joy and our DivineUnity. We do not dwell on the past in this moment. We simply seize the now! Carpe Diem! We accept that by affirming the truth of our DivineUnity, we move into our day with serenity and strength.
We accept the beautiful truth that the Divine is infinite, eternal, wisdom, power, goodness, and truth and above all loving kindness or compassion. Great Spirit is everything, flows through everything and is the source of everything. All things arise from Tao. Tao is always present, the beginning and the end, the first and the last.
Omega
In the end, we all return to the energy from which we were made. Just as our bodies return to the earth in one form or another when we die, our energy cycles back into the Tao. But we must always remember the sacred circle. God/Great Spirit/Love does not end and through living the Tao, living love, living compassion we do not come to an end either. As one begins to live within DivineUnity, one begins to live with the heart of God, the heart of Tao and thus becomes one with the circle of eternity.
Revelation 5-8 goes on to say “Behold, I make all things new”. This goes to the heart of the truth of living within DivineUnity. As we do our practice, we become increasingly renewed through our knowledge of our DivineUnity. We become stronger in truth and thus in faith.
The passage goes on: “Write this, for these words are trustworthy and true.” Universal truth is true where-ever it is found. One cannot make truth untrue. Where ever we find DivineUnity, we know it and we cherish it. We do not fight the truth, we embrace it.
The passage further declares that: “It is done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end.”
This refers back to the previous passage: “Behold, the dwelling of God is with men. He will dwell with them, and they shall be his people” This refers to the truth that God/Tao/Great Spirit is with us now and always. Tao never dies, is always alive, always renewing, always with us, acting through us, as us.
It goes on: “To the thirsty I will give water without price from the fountain of the water of life” This water is love, for love is the water of life. We open our hearts to love and we are opening our hearts to life. When we are led to the waters of truth, we drink and are awakened and the truth sets us free.
Then: “He who conquers shall have this heritage, and I will be his God and he shall be my son.” This directly relates to the truth of our DivineUnity. As one begins to practice the 7 Tools of Transformation, this practice results on one becoming victorious over delusion, over ego and in understanding the truth of our unity with the Divine, we open our hearts and act with intelligent compassion.
Then the passage takes a twist and says: “But as for the cowardly, the faithless, the polluted, as for murderers, fornicators, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars, their lot shall be in the lake that burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.” Why? For those who wish for everything to be love and light, this is a difficult passage. But it refers to what happens to us when we do not do our practice. When we do not begin the day with a positive affirmation of loving kindness, declaring the truth of our DivineUnity and affirming our day as an opportunity to create a better world, then we are committing what the Tibetan Buddhists would call one of the two great sins: Laziness. When we do not create a practice, commit to it and continue it, then we must not be surprised when our consciousness might take a turn to the negative. This is a warning about that.
What is the “second death”? This is the death of our practice and thus the death of the transformation of our consciousness. It is easy to become complacent and not to continue our practice for any number of reasons. If we fall into negative ways and consequent deeds and commit terrible acts, then we are punished by those acts. There is a story of a Buddhist Monk who came to the home of a woman on his pilgrimage. She invites him in, then locks the door. Then she offers him a wonderful leg of lamb. Which he rejects as this is against his faith. She then offers herself. He politely declines her in this as well. He wishes to go, but she refused to unlock the door. She prevails upon him to drink some wine and if he will do this, or eat a piece of roasted goat, or suckle her breasts, then she will unlock the door. He decides that of all the things, the least problematic would be to drink the wine. He does so, then promptly falls into her arms, then following the sex, he is hungry and eats the lamb. She unlocks the door and he understands.
We affirm our Divine Unity and demonstrate this through compassionate action.
We affirm the importance of doing our practice in order to build our Home of Tomorrow in our Hearts Today. We will quench our thirst through God/Tao/Great Spirit learning to live in DivineUnity and demonstrating this through compassionate action. Tao is the beginning and the end and nourishes us even beyond this life.
In Tao 61, it says:
"When a strong country serves the world, it becomes like the ocean, down to which all rivers flow."
Tao is like the ocean to which all rivers flow and from which all rivers spring. The water is a never ending circle and Tao is the rivers and the ocean, is the clouds and the rain. The rains fall and fill the cistern, feeds the spring and thus nourishes the thirsty seeker and fill all cups till overflowing. God is Alpha and Omega. World without end.
Love is eternal and never ends, fear is only temporary
More and more people are understanding the truth that the Kingdom is within. We can embark upon the path where ever we are. The Lotus Sutra teaches us that the pain, difficulties and challenges of our path simply result in a more beautiful awakening. When we choose God/Tao/Great Spirit, then we awaken. The sooner we begin our personal spiritual practice and begin to live our DivineUnity, the sooner we awaken to the truth and can be free from suffering. It does not matter if we believe that all people will be saved in the end or not. The Alpha and Omega is the beginning and the end and Tao is the circle that never ends. The truth is that we are saved by our practice and by letting go of the past and living in the eternal NOW. We are saved by our realization of your DivineUnity and your demonstrating this truth through compassionate action.
Until we make and live this decision, we are in a state of internal struggle. We end this struggle by turning toward the Divine. When we do this, then the Divine Turns to us and our transformation is begun. But this is up to each person. If one does not wish to begin the journey, then the journey does not begin and one continues to live within this struggle which is to live within Hell.
What does it mean that, "If any one worships the beast and its image, and receives a mark on his forehead or on his hand, he also shall drink the wine of God's wrath, poured unmixed into the cup of his anger, and he shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels and in the presence of the Lamb. And the smoke of their torment goes up for ever and ever; and they have no rest, day or night, these worshipers of the beast and its image, and whoever receives the mark of its name."
Revelation 14:9-11
The people who worship the beast and its image are those who deny their DivineUnity and thus these people are in a continuous state of suffering. The mark on their foreheads or hands is the mark the anger which makes this consciousness visible. We all know people who are constantly angry, men and women who are unable to forgive anyone including themselves. These people are drinking the wine distilled from the bitter grapes they insist on carrying and as the Buddha has taught: anger, resentment and the inability to forgive is like carrying a hot coal that burns the carrier but not the focus of the carrier. They are tormented by their own consciousness and this is especially visible to those who are more spiritually/emotionally evolved. The Lamb symbolizes unconditional love. Do you know someone who you love and love and love, but this person never seems to evolve? These are the people who are holding onto their anger so strongly that it has become a spirit of its own and instead of them holding their anger, their anger holds them. This is why “the smoke of their torment goes up forever and ever.” Have you known someone who is bi-polar? Borderline individuals are characterized by having no rest day or night in the sense that their consciousness does not let go of their anger, their fear or their pain. People who reject their DivineUnity often turn to drugs or alcohol or simply find themselves in continuous internal struggle.
The Tao is eternal, compassionate and unlimited
God The Tao/Great Spirit/Goddes is the eternal circle, the alpha and omega for every soul: By embracing this truth, we are nurtured with truth and our thirst is quenched by the spring of unconditional love, by rejecting our DivineUnity, we are often pressing the bitter grapes of wrath and thus living in pain and frustration. Great Spirit / Tao is always here for the thirsty. “I am Alpha and Omega, says the Lord, the beginning and the end.”
Let each of us be thirsty and drink deeply of the waters of love/life. Let us begin with the word as all good things begin. We rise in the morning and declare: “Thank you Great Spirit, for this beautiful day, it is a gift for me to take action demonstrating my DivineUnity through compassionate action.”
